Spartans and Lady Spartans

The Southern Districts Spartans compete in the NBL1 competition introduced for an inaugural 2020 season. Our Spartans and Lady Spartans had an illustrious history in the former Queensland Basketball League (QBL) program. Our association is the most decorated program in Queensland history with a record 17 state championships across our Men’s and Women’s programs since 1986. Southern Districts have had players from QBL play in the NBA, NBL, WNBL, US College system and represent Australia and New Zealand on multiple levels. Our Spartans and Lady Spartans host open trials in February before the season commences in April.

During the off season we maintain a strong elite training program to continue developing our players. For more information contact Rebecca, Coaching Director, at

2020 Lady Spartans Head Coach

Aja Parham-Ammar is the Head Coach of the Carina Leagues Club Lady Spartans for 2020. As a former professional basketball player in the WNBA and Europe, Aja has been an essential part of the Spartans Women’s program. As a player she has been a part of the clubs QBL ‘Three-Peat’ success in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Aja commenced her career in Div 1 of the NCAA at Boston College, before going to be play for Seattle Storm in the WNBA, and securing numerous contracts throughout a seven-year European career prior to her move to Australia.

She has held the position of Assistant Coach for the several QLD State Teams, both male and female, and has worked closely with the High Performance Program in both the mentoring and training of QLD Basketball athletes. Throughout the 2018/19 and 2019/20 season, Aja has taken up roles with the Brisbane Bullets NBL program working in various areas from Development and Training Squad, athlete rehab and strength and conditioning, and video analysis. We can’t wait to see Aja back on the hardwood in a different role but still showing her signature win at all cost attitude.

2020 Spartans Head Coach

Rob Scheibner is the Head Coach of the Southern Districts Spartans for 2020. Rob boasts a long career in the basketball community, beginning as an assistant coach for the Brisbane Bullets from 1993-97 to later joining the Brisbane Capitals and winning a championship in 2002. Rob moved to the ‘darkside’ at Southern Districts to be a part of the Men’s SEABL program and later joined as assistant coach for the back-to-back champion Lady Spartans in 2017 and 2018.

Rob took control of the senior men’s program in 2019 and after making a steady improvement from previous years results is poised to have a break-out season with our 2020 NBL1 Men’s roster. Being the inaugural season for NBL1 North, Southern Districts have put together a strong roster which should see them complete for a top spot in 2020. Rob is ready to bring his ‘no-holds-barred’ attitude to the court and lead our Spartans to success this year.
