Southern Districts Basketball Association today announces regretfully the resignation of Ben Thompson as head coach of the men’s program.
Thompson one of the most decorated and respected junior and senior players ever to wear the Spartans playing singlet has elected to stand aside in 2019 allowing the Association to continue its restructure and direction moving forward.
Taking on the position of head coach in 2017, during the difficult period of the Spartan transition from the South East Australian Basketball League back into the Queensland Basketball League, Thompson stayed true to his commitment to develop players for the future of the Association.
“We all knew it would not be easy with so many of our great players electing to retire and our better future players at college in the USA but Ben stood up to take on the challenge no one else would” offered Allan Ladewig, former General Manager of the Spartans.
“I do not know another person, so loyal to the club, that would be willing to do what had to be done in the restructuring period and our future success will be part of what Ben has done”.
President of the Spartans, Nigel Stainer, also offered “Ben is a fine young man who stood up when it counted. Our club is always better when he is around”.
The head coaching position for the Spartans men’s program will be advertised in late September for the 2019 and ongoing seasons.
